RIP, Niki

This is the human posting...

Niki came to live with me a couple years ago after her previous human passed away. She was 12 at the time.

Last night Niki's health deteriorated. She had trouble walking and seemed not to be able to see. I monitored her health during the night and by morning she seemed to be back to the Niki I knew.

But when I got home from work and Niki wasn't at the window I knew that one way or another it was time for Niki to meet her previous human at the Rainbow Bridge. When I got in the house she was standing, but I could tell that she couldn't see. I offered her a treat, but she couldn't find it. I offered her a bowl of water, but she tried to bite it. So Niki and I took a trip to see Dr. Debbie. They are very nice there. They came out to my truck and sent Niki on her trip from it.

Fare well, Niki. I'm sure you and your previous human Don are catching up on lots of things.

We're sure you're now busying catching up with your previous owner, Don.

Thou' we do not know you but at this side of the world, we read of you. We're sure Turbo pack & hoomans were indeed very very kind people.

2 years maybe short but you surely had led a quality life.

Run happy over at the other side
and Blessed your earthly companions in anyway you can.

I did not have a chance to know you but it sounds like you had a very good life. It's always sad to have to go though. There are many of my beagle siblings who will greet you at the Bridge and they will love running and playing with you.

Dear Niki's person,
We are very sorry for your loss. We know all too well what you are feeling and going through. Niki lived a good long life and YOU saved him from an uncertain future when his previous custodian went to the bridge. All too often "they" just send the little folks along for the ride. We have a lot of family at the bridge and Niki will do just fine. You were his angel; now he is your angel. Here's a poem our dad read to us when Chance and Gordon went to the bridge:
The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this – the last battle – can’t be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me ‘til the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its’ last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close – we two – these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

To Niki's human - we already know that Niki is romping and playing like she did long ago. It's your heart that is heavy with sadness. We know how you feel and we are holding your hand through cyberspace to let you know you are not alone. Love and puppy licks...
